Regional Coun. Kari Williams, known as a 'bright light,' dies after battling cancer
Flags will be lowered in memory of the 40-year-old mother of 2

Waterloo regional Coun. Kari Williams has died after battling cancer.
Williams, 40, was elected in 2022 to represent Kitchener, Ont., on regional council.
She was a mother of two and prior to joining council, she volunteered in the community with the Stanley Park Community Association and ran a weekly food program in her neighbourhood.
A statement by regional chair Karen Redman said councillors were "devastated to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague."
"Coun. Williams was an incredibly bright light, both in our community and in council chambers. She will be exceptionally missed by her council colleagues, Region of Waterloo staff, and the community."
Redman said all flags at regional buildings will be lowered in Williams's memory.

In a GoFundMe created by a friend to honour Williams, funds are being raised to make contributions to her children's Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) to support their future education.
The GoFundMe also confirmed Williams died Tuesday.
"Thank you to everyone who supported Kari throughout her journey," the fundraiser said. "Kari was a passionate advocate for education, having always placed immense value on learning and furthering her education."
