A Guelph man faces dozens of charges after 26 vehicles were damaged downtown causing over $13,000 in damages.

Police started receiving reports of vehicles with damaged side windows around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A total of 26 owners reported damage to their vehicle. The damage ranged from spider web cracks to some windows being completely blown out, Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey said.

All of the vehicles were parked in the area of Cork and Yarmouth streets.

The weapon used was a "blunt instrument," Tracey explained, adding surveillance video showed a man carrying a large, red flashlight which police said most likely was used to damage the windows.

Drops of blood were found on the ground and on the vehicles, which has led police to believe the suspect injured himself while causing the damage.

Tracey said nothing appeared to be stolen from the vehicles and is describing this as "malicious damage for a purpose that's only known to the suspect."

"On Wednesday afternoon the male was located downtown and arrested. He was found to have sustained injuries consistent with the evidence at the scenes," a release sent out Thursday said.

A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with 26 counts each of mischief under $5,000 and attempted theft under $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with a bail order and one count of breaching a probation order.

He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
