There were no reported injuries in a fire that destroyed a part of a small encampment in downtown Kitchener on Thursday morning, said Chris Davidson, deputy fire chief with Kitchener Fire Department.

"There was some heavy smoke and flame in the area of tents and structures," he said. "When we arrived on scene, we did not see anyone around, and our reports that we had were that everyone had evacuated."

Davidson said that the cause of the incident is "undetermined as the damage to the property was too significant to  determine a cause" but they aren't deeming it suspicious.

Fire crews responded to the fire shortly after 7:20 a.m. to the corner of Victoria and Weber streets.

The small encampment is located beside a paramedics services building and across the street from a larger encampment on Victoria Street.

"All the information we have right now is that there were two occupants and they are not on scene anymore but they're not injured," Davidson said, adding they have yet to talk to the assumed occupants.
