Whyte Ave. collision kills pedestrian

A 51-year-old man died in hospital Saturday after he was hit by an eastbound van on Whyte Avenue.

The man, whose name was not released, was struck around 7:30 p.m. Friday at 82nd Avenue and 101st Street.

Police say he was not in a crosswalk when he stepped onto the road.

The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and underwent emergency surgery. He died early Saturday.

No charges have been laid. The man's death marks Edmonton's first traffic fatality of 2011.
