A 63-year-old man has died after being hit by a pickup truck involved in a chase through Old Strathcona Thursday evening.

Police say the driver of the truck was fleeing the scene of a separate hit-and-run collision when he hit the man. The pickup allegedly rear-ended a car on 63rd Avenue and drove away.

The driver of the second car followed the pickup on Gateway Boulevard, until it turned right onto Whyte Avenue.

That's when police say the truck hit the man who was crossing the avenue near 101st Street around 6 p.m.

According to police, the suspect tried to flee but other drivers boxed him in with their vehicles until police arrived.

The suspect is in custody and several charges are pending.
