Metro Line reopens after partial closure due to suspicious death investigation
LRT line was closed for several hours Thursday morning
A police investigation into a suspicious death at an LRT station in downtown Edmonton caused Thursday's hours-long disruption along the Metro Line.
Police arrested five people Wednesday night, after receiving reports of an assault at the MacEwan LRT station, behind Rogers Place, and finding a dead male at the scene.
Metro Line riders had to make alternate plans Thursday morning, as the line shut down for several hours between the Churchill and NAIT stations.
Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) had said an "unexpected incident" caused the disruption, but spokespeople from ETS and the Edmonton Police Service told CBC News Thursday afternoon that it was due to the ongoing investigation.
Shortly before 11:45 p.m. MT Wednesday, police responded to reports of an assault involving multiple people fighting at the MacEwan LRT station, according to a news release police issued Thursday.
There, officers found a dead male. Police did not specify the victim's age.
Police arrested three youths and two adults at the scene and, currently, officers believe all suspects are in custody, police said.
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.
Service along the Metro Line LRT normally starts at 6 a.m. on weekdays. But service between Churchill and NAIT stations was paused until around 11 a.m. Thursday, an ETS spokesperson said.
