Mayor calls shooting 'very sad, very tragic'

A boy has died after the firearm he and his brother were playing with accidentally was fired at the family home near Grande Cache, Alta.

RCMP Sgt. Josee Valquette confirmed Tuesday the shooting involved two brothers.

Family members told CBC News that the boy who died was 10, and his brother was younger.

A cousin who asked to be identified as Jolene said the family "is holding up. We have a big huge family and we're all pulling together."

Jolene said the boy will be laid to rest on Thursday. She added the family did not want photos of the boys to be made public.

Grande Cache Mayor Herb Castle called the shooting "very sad, very tragic." He said he heard the boys were apparently playing with a firearm that nobody knew was loaded.

RCMP were called to a rural home outside the town at about 10:45 a.m. Monday MT after someone reported the discharge of a firearm.

No one under age 11 can be charged criminally in Canada, so any charges would have to be against adults in the home.

Jolene said the family has been told that no charges will be laid. But RCMP said the investigation is continuing and no decision has been made.
