Fort McMurray reunites over 1,200 pets in wildfire aftermath

Pet owners in Fort McMurray have until Thursday to claim any pets they left behind during wildfire evacuation.

Over 1,200 cats, dogs and reptiles have been reunited with their owners in the aftermath of the wildfire in Fort McMurray, according to the municipality.

"Fort McMurray is a very strong community and obviously their pets are family," said Jeffrey Simpkins, the animal control supervisor for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. 

Simpkins said the municipality rescued 1,229 animals in the aftermath of the fire. 

The municipality is wrapping up pet rescues and reunifications.on Thursday. Only three cats are left in its care. Staff have named the felines Chacha, Toothless and Bruce.

If the owners don't show up by July 14th,  the municipality will put the cats up for adoption.
