Edmonton's police chief rushed to hospital

Edmonton Police Chief Mike Boyd fell ill at headquarters Wednesday morning and was hospitalized, suffering from what was termed a "medical incident."

"He wasn't feeling well yesterday. We were all with him. He basically got a little dizzy, tried to stand up …we sat him down and got him some help," Deputy Chief Daryl da Costa said.

Police spokesman Dean Parthenis said Boyd was responsive and alert when he left police headquarters in an ambulance shortly after 10 a.m.

Tests were conducted at the hospital and Boyd was feeling better as Wednesday wore on, Parthenis said.

Police sources have told CBC that Boyd fell ill about 45 minutes after giving an address to an arson conference in Edmonton.

Police media relations alerted the entire service by email about the chief's illness.

Boyd remains in hospital. Deputy Chief da Costa is acting as chief in Boyd's absence.

Police media relations aren't releasing any details about the medical problems that sent Boyd to hospital.

He will return to work at a date determined by Boyd and his doctor.
