Duchess Bake Shop named on Buzzfeed's international bakery bucket list
The 124th Street spot, where customers are already used to lining up for a treat, has gotten even busier
Edmonton's own Duchess Bake Shop has been handed a dollop of international recognition after being included in Buzzfeed's ultimate bucket list of bakeries to visit before you die.
The popular website published its list of 23 bakeries on Sunday. The winning entries were selected by members of the Buzzfeed online community group.
"Arguably the best bakery in Canada, the Duchess has a philosophy of using 'no mixes, no preservatives, and no shortcuts.' An equal opportunity baker, they have both a duke and a duchess cake,'" wrote Kendra Thompson in her nomination of the bakery.
Duchess, located on 124th Street and 107th Avenue, was the only Canadian bakery to make the cut, coming in at fourth place.
Bakery manager Kim Molander says staff are honoured to have made the list.
"Especially being named amongst the names that were with us!"
Those names included famous spots like B. Patiserrie in San Francisco, the Queen of Tarts in Dublin and Ladurée in Paris.
And the online recognition is already drawing in more people to the already-popular spot — on Wednesday, many of the shelves usually filled with tarts, cakes, cookies and croissants were left completely empty.
What other Canadian bakeries do you think should have been included in the list?
