The family of a couple seriously injured in an early morning hit-and-run near Westbrook Mall are pleading for anyone with information to come forward to police.

Calgary police said at 1:30 a.m., a man and a woman were walking at the intersection of 13th Avenue and 37th Street S.W. when they were hit by a dark-coloured sedan.

The driver of the sedan failed to remain at the scene of the crash, police said.

The two pedestrians were both taken to hospital in serious condition.

Family members of the couple say the man's parents witnessed the accident.

"Both victims are in a bad way and the hospital will not allow [their] parents to be with them. It is pure hell and torment for us all," a family member said in a statement sent via Facebook.

The family asked for anyone with information to please contact police, or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.

"Please respect our privacy at this time," the family requested.

The intersection was closed while police investigated, but has since reopened.
