Police in Abbotsford and Langley say they are investigating the origin of violent threats circulating online, and there is no information to suggest the threats are real.

A Monday news release from the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) says it is aware of an email and social media posts claiming that acts of violence targeting various schools in the city will occur on Monday.

Police said they believe the incident is an attempt at "swatting," the practice of calling police to falsely report a serious incident, triggering a swift and significant response.

They said that over the weekend police responded to numerous swatting calls, which falsely claimed that violence was taking place and people were in danger,

Sgt. Paul Walker, media relations officer for the APD, said at a Monday press conference that whoever is sending these messages wants to "create fear."

"Individuals that send these types of messages have no place in our community," Walker said.

Langley RCMP said in a release that they are aware of threats of violence targeting schools and daycares in both Langley and Abbotsford, and they are working closely with police in Abbotsford to investigate the threats.

It is asking anyone with information to contact their local police agency.

The Abbotsford School District wrote in a Monday morning statement that it is aware of the threats, and has been in close contact with the Abbotsford Police.

It says schools are taking additional safety measures, including locking exterior doors and increasing supervision.

"All schools remain open, but as always, families are encouraged to make the decision that feels best for them," said the statement.

The Langley School District said schools remain open, and affected schools had a school liaison officer on site Monday.

The University of the Fraser Valley said it had also added additional security officers at its Abbotsford campus on Monday.

The APD said police will ensure the public is informed of any new information regarding student safety.
