Alex Ovechkin scores 500th career goal

With both his parents in the crowd, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin achieved something amazing on Sunday night, scoring the 500th goal of his NHL career against the Ottawa Senators.

He became the fifth fastest player in NHL history to reach the milestone, doing so in just 801 games. Considering the era in which Ovechkin is playing, that is something remarkable. 

"It's nice to be in that spot," Ovechkin told reporters after the game. "It's a history moment. I wave and blew a kiss to my dad and my mom. My dad quit his job and spend all his time with me. Basically he was my personal coach when I was a little kid and for him it was a special moment.
 
"It's a pretty special moment for them."

The only players faster were Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Brett Hull.

He also became the first Russian-born player to reach 500 goals. 

The game was even stopped for a short period as Ovechkin had two curtain calls.

The goal gave Washington a 5-1 lead over Ottawa late in the second period. 

He added his second goal, the 501st of his career, early in the third period. 

Ovechkin scored goal number 499 on Saturday night, with a beautiful end-to-end rush to beat the New York Rangers in overtime. 

The Russian sniper has six 50-goal seasons since entering the NHL in 2005-06 and scored a career-high 65 goals in the 2007-08 season.
