Alex Ovechkin scored two goals, including the overtime winner, to lead the Washington Capitals 4-3 over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. Ovechkin is now just one goal shy of 500 and can reach the milestone on Sunday against the Ottawa Senators.

The deciding goal at the 1:25 mark of the extra frame was an absolute beauty. After Rangers centre Derek Stepan was stopped at point-blank range thanks to Capitals defenceman Nate Schmidt, Ovechkin took the puck from behind the net, through traffic and down the length of the ice where he calmly potted the winning goal.

Ovechkin's 24th goal of the season brought his career total to 499. His next goal is bound to be more memorable, but hopefully it is just as dazzling and timely.

The 30-year-old would become the 43 player to reach the milestone and he has a chance to do so on home ice.
