Calvillo named CFL offensive player of the month

Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo was unanimously chosen as the CFL's offensive player of the month.

Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo was unanimously chosen as the CFL's offensive player of the month on Wednesday.

Calvillo, the league's outstanding player the last two years, led the Als to an impressive 4-1 record in July while leading the CFL in passing yards and completion percentage.

The Grey Cup-winning pivot completed a robust 69.9 per cent of his passes, throwing for 1,606 yards and 10 touchdowns against only two interceptions.

A veteran of 17 years, Calvillo ranks second all-time for career passing yards (64,928) and touchdown passes (364), behind only the great Damon Allen.

The Alouettes received more honours as Montreal end John Bowman was also a unanimous selection for defensive player of the month.

Bowman caused a league-high four forced fumbles and finished tied for the CFL lead with six sacks.

The top special teams player went to Hamilton's kick-returner Marcus Thigpen. He sits second in the CFL with 846 combined yards through the first five games of the season and is tied for second with four touchdowns.

Thigpen has scored his TDs in four different ways (kickoff return, punt return, missed field goal return and receiving), becoming only the sixth player in CFL history to accomplish the feat.

Saskatchewan slotback Andy Fantuz took home the top Canadian honour. Fantuz hauled in 25 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns and is a big reason the Riders are off to a 4-1 start.
