Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has faced widespread criticism for “outdated and harmful rhetoric” after he made a reference to women’s biological clocks in news conferences where he said that families were running out of time to buy homes and start families. But Poilievre's supporters say the issue is real. According to Statistics Canada, in 2023, the country recorded its lowest ever fertility rate for the second year in a row, with just 1.26 children born per woman. Marina Adshade, an economics professor at the University of British Columbia, spoke to the CBC’s Dan Burritt about the Conservative leader’s comments, given that B.C. has the nation’s lowest fertility rate at one child per woman.
