Author Rebecca Traister talks about unmarried women, Hillary Clinton, sexism and her new book "All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation."

Rebecca Traister has a message for all you unsuspecting women out there: get ready for things to get nasty.

Traister, a journalist and author of All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation, suggests no one should be surprised by an outpouring of sexism and misogyny should Hillary Clinton become the U.S. president. And it could extend far beyond the mudslinging of politicians and media pundits.

Traister predicts that sexism will become prominent, much in the way racial tensions have come to the fore in the U.S. under President Barack Obama.

"There's been this enormous outpouring of racism. I don't think it was created by [Obama's presidency], I think it was under the surface. But the fact that there was this visible symbol of racial progress just let it all out. And I think we'll see other iterations of that if Hillary Clinton becomes president."

Despite that depressing observation, Traister calls herself an optimist, buoyed by the fact that single women make up nearly a quarter of the U.S. electorate for November's presidential election.

Traister says this changing reality is also going to make for some rocky times ahead.

"It's not familiar. It's scary," she said. "It makes a lot of us really uncomfortable and some people very angry, because it's about the new kinds of power women have."
