Candles glowed and people wept openly at vigils around the world as they remembered the 12 victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris on Wednesday.
The memorials also included pens, press cards and placards reading "Je Suis Charlie" — I Am Charlie. That phrase, with white print on a black background, has been replicated throughout Europe and around the world.
Vivid images of the sadness, shock and anger emerged from the crowds gathered at Paris's Place de la République, and soon after at London's Trafalgar Square, in Toronto, Montreal and New York's Union Square.
