Susan Ormiston on FIFA security issues, street protests
A favela view of Ipanema Beach before the World Cup
In a Brazilian neighbourhood overlooking the storied Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, CBC correspondent Susan Ormiston is surprised by the calm atmosphere leading up the FIFA World Cup soccer kickoff.
The unregulated neighbourhoods known as favelas are home to more than a million Brazilians, poor families who want the same rights to education, health care and jobs as everyone else. But the favelas are also infamous for gun battles and turf wars in the drug trade.
Although some favelas in north Rio are now patrolled by armed soldiers in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup, Ormiston finds a calm atmosphere in the favela overlooking the beach made famous by the song The Girl from Ipanema.
As Ormiston and her crew wait to catch the sunset, she reflects on security issues, ticket availability and street protests. Watch the video in the player above.
