Fear grips West Africa as death toll climbs
The spread of the Ebola virus has devastated regions of West Africa, killing nearly 5,000 people. The outbreak began in southeastern Guinea in March and has since spread to countries including Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Transmission of the virus has been contained in Nigeria and Senegal but other cases of ebola have since been identified and treated in the United States, Spain and Mali. The UN has deemed the outbreak international public health emergency, warning that containment of the deadly virus is crucial to our "collective health security". There is no known cure for the virus.
