The action is 'amazing' in George Clooney's sci-fi epic, but the plot has 'a few wormholes,' says CBC film critic Eli Glasner

Tomorrowland bursts into theatres this weekend like a blazing fire of optimism amid a grim buffet of dystopian flicks.

The shiny sci-fi adventure, named after the futuristic land from Disney's theme parks, stars George Clooney as cynical inventor Frank Walker, who was kicked out of the titular city.

In this story, Tomorrowland is a technologically advanced realm in an alternate dimension that houses "the best and the brightest people in the world," Walker explains.

The disillusioned dreamer is drawn back into the futuristic world by Casey Newtown, a tenacious teen, played by The Longest Ride actress Britt Robertson.

Written by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird (director of The Incredibles), Tomorowland features some "amazing" action sequences, says CBC's film critic, Eli Glasner.

"But look behind the robots and ray guns and the plot is filled with few wormholes," he says.

"As it is, it's a bit like the amusement park that inspired it: a fun ride that goes nowhere fast."

Tomorrowland goes into wide release Friday.
