The Police to kick off reunion tour in Vancouver

The Police reunion tour will begin May 28 in Vancouver and include at least two other Canadian dates, the band announced Monday.

The influential 1980s band, which played its hit Roxanne at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, will begin its first tour in 23 years at GMPlace in Vancouver, members said after performing for select fans at Whisky A Go Go club in West Hollywood.

Toronto's Air Canada Centreon July 22 and Montreal's Bell Centreon July 25 will be among the arena and stadium venues for the tour, the first since theydisbanded in 1984.

Singer Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers have had solo careers since breaking up in 1984 after the Synchronicity tour.

The Police had a string of hits from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. They include Don't Stand So Close to Me, Every Breath You Take and Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.

Sincethe breakup, the band has performed atits induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Other confirmedshows for the spring-summer tour include the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee and Madison Square Garden inNew York, as well as in Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, New Orleans and St. Louis.

The tour will continue this fall with dates in the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France, and is expected to continueinMexico, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Rock trio Fiction Plane will open for the Police in the North American portion of the tour.

A portion of the proceeds from the tour will be donated to WaterAid, an international agency that improvesaccess to safe water.
