Lawrence Hill to release Blood: The Stuff of Life for Massey Lectures
Acclaimed Canadian author Lawrence Hill will examine the scientific and social history of blood during the 2013 CBC Massey Lectures.
Hill, best known for his award-winning bestseller The Book of Negroes, has written an accompanying book titled Blood: The Stuff of Life, which House of Anansi Press will publish in September.
The Hamilton, Ont.-based author will then present the ideas explored in the book during his Massey Lectures tour to five Canadian cities this fall.
- Montreal: Oct. 15 at Concordia University.
- Halifax: Oct 17 at the Dalhousie Arts Centre.
- Vancouver: Oct. 23 at The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.
- Edmonton: Oct. 25, at the University of Alberta.
- Toronto: Nov. 1 at Koerner Hall.
The Massey Lectures, an annual five-part series on a political, cultural or philosophical topic by a noted scholar, will air on CBC Radio's Ideas Nov. 11-15. Hill follows in the footsteps of other distinguished Massey lecturers such as Northrop Frye, Noam Chomsky, Margaret Atwood, Stephen Lewis, Doris Lessing and Martin Luther King Jr.
Hill is also finishing a new novel and working on a miniseries adaptation of The Book of Negroes with Canadian filmmaker Clement Virgo, with shooting to begin in South Africa in the fall. It will air on CBC-TV and American network BET.
