Daniel Sullivan, 47, of Pickering was charged with one count of aggravated assault in a Toronto court on Thursday.
Crown prosecutors have upgraded the charge from assault.
The change means Sullivan could face a jail term of up to 14 years if convicted, up from five years for assault.
Last September, a man ran onto the stage during the Oasis set at the Virgin Music Festival in Toronto and attacked Gallagher as he was playing.
The guitarist suffered three broken and dislodged ribs and had to cancel several concert appearances after the incident.
Sullivan will next appear in court March 6.
