Parks Canada has announced that the Tip Tower at Point Pelee National Park has reopened to the public.

The 24 metre metal observation tower has 144 steps to the top that are wide enough to allow for two-way traffic up and down the tower.

It offers panoramic views of Canada's southernmost point and was first opened in 2019.

"Parks Canada would like to thank the local community and visitors to the park for their ongoing patience as we worked to resume access to the 360-degree vistas from the Tip Tower in Point Pelee National Park," the agency said.

Inspectors noticed a possible safety issue with the tower guard rail system during a routine inspection in May of 2022, according to a news release issued Monday by Parks Canada.

That led to the tower closing and a third party conducting an engineering assessment.

The assessment confirmed that the tower itself is structurally sound, and the issue was isolated to the guard rail system, Parks Canada says.

Workers designed the new guard rail replacement through the winter of 2023 and 2024.

Heritage Restoration Inc. began work on it in May and finished on Sunday.

Some final updates to the tower will continue over the coming weeks, Parks Canada said.
