Unifor rep says more follow-up needed

Unifor is calling for improved workplace safety legislation after a contract workers fell through the roof at Venture Plastics in Windsor last week.

A funeral is planned on Wednesday for the worker who fell through a skylight at Ventra Plastics last week.

Rob Morneau, an electrician at multi-trade contractor Vollmer, died when he tripped and fell through the skylight while working at Ventra on Kew Drive, according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

Occupational health and safety legislation needs to be strengthened, according to Nicole Simpson, health and safety chairwoman at Unifor Local 195.

"We have a lot of good programs out there, a lot of good standards, guidelines to follow," she said. "It's the fact that we're not actually following up on the training of these things. We do the training, and that's pretty much it."

Officials with Vollmer would not comment on the incident. The company has been ordered to provide documentation and to not disturb the site.
