It was only three years ago that Malek Mekawi was a high school student under the Greater Essex County District School Board — which he now joins as a trustee to replace Sarah Cipkar, who left the board in November citing personal and professional commitments.

Malek Mekawi, 20, is the newest trustee of the Greater Essex County District School Board. The University of Windsor engineering student was appointed to replace Sarah Cipkar, who left the board in November. CBC's Dalson Chen spoke with Mekawi, who is younger than most of his fellow board members by decades.

The Greater Essex County District Board has chosen its newest trustee — and he's younger than most of his fellow board members.

Malek Mekawi, 20, was appointed by the public school board on Monday night, effective immediately.

"I think that, because of my age, I bring a fresh perspective — a unique perspective," Mekawi told CBC Windsor. "And honestly, an informed perspective."

Mekawi replaces former trustee Sarah Cipkar, who resigned from her position with the board in November citing personal and professional commitments.

Mekawi will represent wards 3, 4, and 10 until the next school board election set for Oct. 26, 2026.

On Monday, he was selected by board vote from a field of 10 candidates. Candidates interviewed with the board during a public special meeting. Mekawi was selected by a majority of trustees by voting and appointed with a motion

Mekawi said he believes he has a proven track record of delivering for students: He served as a student trustee for the board during the 2021-22 school year.

"I got to see what it was like to be part of the board from the student side of things," Mekawi said. "I feel as if I have a good rapport with our students, our educators, and the community at large."

During his public interview process, Mekawi expressed his support for the board's efforts to "foster an inclusive environment" that reflects the diversity of the student population — "including substantial representation from Black, East Asian, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities."

Asked if he feels the age difference between himself and the parents of students might pose any difficulties to him being able to relate to them and represent their interests, Mekawi said he will strive to earn their trust.

"Obviously, I wasn't elected as the other board members have been," he said. "But I'm hopeful that, over the next year and a half of my tenure, I'll be able to gain [parents'] trust and work collectively with our community on things that matter most to them."

In an email to CBC Windsor, Cipkar said she has full confidence in Mekawi taking on his new role.

"I worked with Malek during his time as a student trustee and witnessed his dedication and excellent work ethic first hand," Cipkar wrote.

"I commend the GECDSB... for their wisdom in appointing an individual who brings a different perspective than the majority of the board — both in terms of age and experience, but also cultural and generational background."

Mekawi is currently in his third year of studies in the University of Windsor's electrical and computer engineering programs.

"I've always been a student who likes to balance a bunch of different extra-curriculars," he said.

The next regular meeting of the GECDSB is on the evening of Jan. 21.
