The LaSalle Police Service is warning people across Canada about a scam involving callers who are cloning the force's phone number.

The caller claims to be a police officer and notifies the person on the other end of the line that they have been a victim of identity theft, the police service said in a news release issued Friday.

The callers know the first and last names of the targets and will provide fictitious badge numbers and report/occurrence numbers.

Police say the calls are a scam, and the service would not notify someone of identity theft in this manner.

Anyone who receives such a call should promptly hang up the phone and not release any personal information.
