A familiar face will be taking the reins at Essex-Windsor EMS after the retirement of Chief Bruce Krauter later this year.

Justin Lammers, currently the service's deputy chief of planning and physical resources, has been named the new chief of Essex-Windsor EMS, set to step into the position in October, the county announced Wednesday.

Krauter will retire in February 2024.

"Deputy Chief Lammers embodies the Essex-Windsor EMS motto of accountability, integrity and compassion," Krauter said.

"He has developed a wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding of the service — first as a paramedic and then as a member of the management team. He oversaw the service's COVID-19 response, built the community paramedic program from the ground up and has been involved in numerous community focused committees and working groups."

Krauter will stay on in a advisory role after Lammers takes over in October to smooth the transition.

"I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to lead our organization as we overcome challenges and keep striving to provide the best emergency medical services possible," Lammers said.

"I am proud of our entire team for continuing to show resilience in the face of adversity and always aiming higher. Their commitment inspires me and helps fuel my passion for Essex-Windsor EMS, paramedicine and serving the residents of our community."

Lammers first joined the service in 2005 and was named deputy chief of planning and physical resources in January. He had previously spent eight years as the deputy chief of professional standards, and has also worked as an advanced care paramedic and professional standards captain with Essex-Windsor EMS.

According to the county, as deputy chief Lammers was involved in launching the Mental Health and Addictions Response Team (MHART) and also managed logistics for the service during the COVID-19 pandemic.
