Detroit man jailed for dropping handgun at Canadian border

A Detroit man has been sentenced to 17 months in jail and three years' probation after a loaded hand gun dropped from his vehicle at the Windsor-Detroit border, the Canada Border Services Agency says.

The incident happened Jan. 13, but the CBSA made the information public Friday.

According to the CBSA, the 21-year-old man made "a wrong turn" and took the Ambassador Bridge to Canada.

After speaking with an agent at the border, he was sent for a more thorough, secondary inspection.

As the vehicle approached the inspection area, an officer saw a door open slightly and something dropped to the ground. Officers went to the site and found a loaded handgun.

The Detroit resident was arrested, charged and turned over to the Windsor Police Services.

During the court appearance, he pleaded guilty to possession/disposing of illegally imported goods, under the Customs Act.
