City of Windsor invites residents to come and play to celebrate Earth Day

The City of Windsor is inviting residents to celebrate Earth Day on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The theme of this year's event is "Earth Play," according to city environmental coordinator Averil Parent, who added the festivities will be held at an especially fitting location — Malden Park, which was once a landfill.
"We're trying to improve recycling and a lot of people in the city want composting, so we're trying to get there, moving away from landfills," she explained. "But in reality landfills are kind of a part of our landscape and it's great to kind of repurpose this one into such a great amenity for the community."
Many of the Earth Day activities are aimed at kids this year, including a nature scavenger hunt and a playground made of recycled materials.
Parent said the annual celebration has come a long way from the first time she got involved seven years ago.
"We never knew from year to year how much money we would have to put on the event, and the city and the solid waste authority have really solidified their contributions and their commitment to making Earth Day an annual event."
