Toronto police say one man is dead after a shooting at Yonge and Bloor and three suspects are on the loose.

Multiple people reported hearing gunshots near the busy downtown intersection around 8 p.m.

The victim was rushed to hospital via emergency run but was later pronounced dead, police said.

Police officers cordoned off a large area with crime tape. Officers could be seen speaking with several witnesses.

One woman who declined to give her name said she's a friend of the victim. She told CBC News she saw her friend get into an altercation before the gunfire erupted. She said she administered CPR before paramedics arrived.

"There was no fight, just an argument and that was it," the woman said.

"There were five shots fired. I'm not sure how many connected to him," she said.

The shooting took place near a Tim Hortons, Starbucks and Jack Astor's, all of which were likely busy at the time. There's also a TTC entrance within the cordoned-off area.

Another bystander, who said he was around the corner from the scene when the shooting happened, said he also heard five shots ring out.

"I heard five loud bangs and it didn't sound like a car backfiring," Eamon O'Hanlon said.

The three suspects are described as:

  • Male, white, wearing a white jacket
  • Male, white, wearing a baby blue jacket
  • Male, white, wearing a black jacket

Police reopened Yonge Street between Bloor and Cumberland Streets Thursday morning after shutting down the area overnight for the investigation.
