Halton police have arrested a suspect after a driver fled from the scene of a hit-and-run that sent a 13-year-old boy to hospital with critical injuries in Burlington Friday night.

Staff Sgt. Stephanie Jameson told CBC News a 23-year-old man has been arrested after a boy on his bike was struck just before 5:30 p.m. at a crosswalk at Taywood Drive and Appleby Line.

The teen was taken to Oakville Trafalgar Hospital before being airlifted to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Police say the driver was in a white four-door hatchback similar to a Volkswagen Golf.

Jameson said a witness provided licence plate information that was used to find the suspect.
