Powerful thunderstorms roared through the GTA while a possible tornado was spotted in Goderich, Ont. on Monday night.

Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm and tornado watches and warnings for much of southern Ontario, warning the powerful storm systems could bring dangerous lightning and high winds with them.

Near Goderich, southern Ontario storm chaser Dave Patrick photographed what appeared to be a tornado touching down. Environment Canada has not confirmed if the funnel cloud was, in fact, a tornado.

Environment Canada had issued a tornado warning in the area at around 10 p.m.

Goderich Fire said as of 10:25 p.m. they haven't been called out to deal with any fires or damage, but are aware of the bad weather and are expecting more.

There are no reports of injury at this time. Anyone in the area should seek shelter.

Residents of Toronto and much of the surrounding region, meanwhile, were told to watch out for severe and potentially dangerous thunderstorms.

Environment Canada warned the thunderstorms rolling east across the GTA could cause "intense lightning" and potentially drop hail and torrential rain in some spots.

The storm at one point knocked out power in some areas of Toronto, including to some 2,300 customers in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area according to Toronto Hydro.

The storms are also bringing strong wind, with gusts between 50-70 km/h.
