Man, 25, charged with 2nd-degree murder in death of mother: Durham police

A 64-year-old woman is dead after being assaulted by her son in Pickering early Sunday morning, Durham police say. 

The 25-year-old man is now facing a second-degree murder charge, says a news release from Durham Regional Police. 

The woman was found with life-threatening injuries when police responded to a report of a possible collision in the area of Foxwood Trail and Weyburn Square at about 5:10 a.m., per the news release. 

She was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.

Officers later determined the woman's injuries were caused by an assault, not the collision, police say. 

Police arrested the woman's son at the scene.

Several police cars were still in the area Sunday evening. Police had taped off a vehicle that appeared to have crashed into a tree.
