Parapan Am Games closing ceremony caps weekend road closures

Nathan Phillips Square is being transformed for Saturday’s closing ceremonies of the Parapan Am Games and several area roads will be closed for the event.

Avoid Bay, Gerrard, Danforth and Bloor if you're driving this weekend

Wyclef Jean, the Grammy Award-winning singer/guitarist, brings his 'ecleftic' sound to the the closing ceremony of the Parapan Games Saturday at Nathan Phillips Square.

Several roads around Nathan Phillips Square will be closed Saturday as Torontonians converge on the square for the closing ceremonies of the Parapan Am Games.

Bay Street will be closed from Queen Street West to Dundas Street West from 4 p.m. to midnight. 

  • Wellington Street will be closed from Church Street to University Avenue from 5 p.m. until midnight.
  • Front Street will be closed from Church Street to Parliament Street from 5 p.m. until midnight.
  • James Street and Albert Street will be closed from 4 p.m. to midnight.
  • University Avenue northbound will be reduced to two lanes from Queen Street to south of Armoury Street from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Several other downtown roads will also be closed to accommodate  street events.

Gerrard Street East will be closed from Coxwell Avenue to Glenside Avenue from 10 a.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. on Monday for the annual Festival of South Asia. There will be no TTC service along that strip during the event.

Wheels On The Danforth

Danforth Avenue will be closed from Byng Avenue to Warden Avenue, and Danforth Road to Landry Avenue from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday for Wheels on the Danforth. The TTC will be rerouting buses during that time.

Bloor Street from Spadina Avenue/Road to Parliament Street and Yonge Street from Bloor Street to Queen Street will be closed on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the Open Streets Toronto event, vehicles will be able to cross Bloor Street at Spadina Avenue/Road, Avenue Road, Bay Street, Ted Rogers Way, Church Street, Sherbourne Street and Parliament Street. Vehicles will be able to cross Yonge Street at College Street/Carlton Street, Gerrard Street, Dundas Street, Shuter Street and Queen Street.

On Sunday, the Albion Islington Square Business Improvement Association will host the annual Fusion of Taste on Islington Avenue, between Wardlaw Crescent and Albion Road. The event will run from noon to 10:30 p.m. and TTC buses operating on the 37 route will be diverting in both directions.

Subway closure

If you're planning on taking the subway between St Clair West and Lawrence West stations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, consider looking for an alternative. The four stations will not be serviced due to emergency repairs by Toronto Hydro. The TTC says replacement buses will be used and Wheel-Trans buses will be in place, too.

And emergency streetcar track repairs this weekend in the tunnel leading to Spadina Station means the 510 streetcar will be on diversion via College Street and Bathurst Street. from 5 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday.

You can board the 510 Spadina replacement buses inside the bus bay at street level. The 510 Spadina streetcars will service Bathurst Station. The Spadina bus replacement will travel south on Spadina Avenue, east on Adelaide Street, north on Peter Street, west on Richmond Street, north on Spadina Avenue to Spadina Station.
