Two people are dead after a shooting Tuesday night in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood, police say.

The incident happened around 11:10 p.m. near Bain and Logan avenues, Toronto police said in a post on X. Officers responded to the sound of gunshots in the area.

When they arrived, they found two male victims were found with gunshot wounds. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to hospital where they later died, police said.

The victims were in their late teens to early twenties, Det.-Sgt. Al Bartlett said on Wednesday. Police are working to identify the victims and notify their next of kin, he said.

Bartlett said it's too early to speculate whether it was a targeted shooting, but said the gunshots "appear to be clustered, which might suggest a targeting."

"I don't believe it was a random act at this point," he said.

Two suspects last seen running toward Withrow Park

Police are looking for two suspects who were last seen running toward Withrow Park, Bartlett said. The suspects are male, between five feet five and five feet eight inches tall and are wearing dark clothing, police said on X on Wednesday morning.

But Bartlett said its possible the two suspects do not match this description, since it was nighttime and police are getting information from eyewitnesses.

"We do have some conflicting information," he said.

There will be an increased police presence in the area, Duty Inspector Todd Jocko told reporters at the scene.

"Rest assured that we're going to be conducting a thorough investigation," he said. "Everybody is doing all the necessary steps to maintain public safety."

Levi Goertz, who lives in the area, said he was sleeping when he heard several loud noises around 11:15 p.m.

"It was very loud and multiple in a row. It made me think [they were] gunshots," he said.

He said his wife was outside walking their dog at the time, and she saw two men running. She was interviewed by police, he said.

Anyone with information or footage of the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

The homicide unit is investigating.
