Residents of a Mississauga neighbourhood are rattled after a disturbing case of arson. CBC’s Tyreike Reid has the latest details from police.

A teen boy has been arrested after a Mississauga home was set on fire and a dog injured on Thursday, Peel Regional Police say.

Police said they were called to a home on Atwater Avenue, near Lakeshore Road E. and Hurontario Street, for reports of a residential fire at about 11:40 a.m.

The house was intentionally set on fire, Const. Tyler Bell told reporters near the scene, but no one was injured in the blaze. He said nobody but the teen and the dog appeared to be home at the time.

The teen was arrested nearby, he said.

Police said the injured dog was taken to a local animal hospital. Bell said a caller told police the dog was stabbed at the doorway, but he couldn't confirm that.

The teen who was arrested is believed to be responsible for both the house fire and dog injuries, Bell said.

There's no word on charges yet.

"It is not considered random at this point or an unknown suspect," Bell said. "The circumstances of this are strange to say the least."

Bell said the fire caused substantial damage to the inside of the house.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services said the fire has been extinguished and Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal has been called to investigate.

Police urged members of the public to give the family privacy.
