Blood trail leads police to scene of downtown shooting

A 27-year-old man is dead following an overnight shooting near Parliament and Richmond streets. But at this point, police say they have no suspects and no clear motive. 

Police were called to the Shell gas station at the intersection just after 2 a.m. Saturday after reports of gunshots. When they arrived on scene they found an unconscious man in the parking lot. 

The man had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency crews arrived, police said. A police spokesman initially said the victim was 22, but amended that on Sunday.

"He was laying on the ground," said one bystander, who said he was there when police discovered the body. 

"I thought he was like a homeless person on the street, or probably got knocked out — nothing to do with murder. I didn't hear any gunshots."

Police say the victim was shot about a block away. They followed a blood trail north and then east along Queen Street East. The trail ended near the Magic Oven restaurant, where police found multiple shell casings. 

A lot of people were in area at the time of the shooting, according to investigators. 

"There were a least two separate events going on on Queen Street in two restaurants there — and there were a large number of people at both restaurants," said Det. Sgt. Mike Paterson. 

Police seized two vehicles that were parked nearby, but later in the day said they were not sure if they are connected to the shooting. 

The death marks the city's 22nd homicide of the year.
