Man accused of setting woman on fire on Toronto bus makes virtual court appearance

A 33-year-old man accused of setting a woman on fire on a Toronto public transit bus on Friday made a virtual appearance in court Monday.

Tenzin Norbu, 33, charged with attempted murder in what police call a hate-motivated attack

Police were called to Kipling subway station after a man poured a liquid substance on the woman and ignited it, leaving her with life-altering injuries.

A 33-year-old man accused of setting a woman on fire on a Toronto public transit bus on Friday made a virtual appearance in court Monday.

Toronto man Tenzin Norbu has been charged with attempted murder in what police are calling a hate-motivated incident.

Norbu has also been charged with assault with a weapon, common nuisance and mischief. 

Norbu made a brief appearance in court via video link on Monday afternoon. The family of the victim, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, also watched the appearance on video.

He is set to be back in court Tuesday.

Woman assaulted at Kipling station on Friday

On Friday, Toronto police said officers were called to Kipling subway station, in the area of Kipling Avenue and Dundas Street West, at about 12:30 p.m. They had received reports of a woman being assaulted.

According to police, a man poured a liquid substance on the woman and ignited it, causing a fire.

The woman was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. On Friday, she was said to be in hospital with life-altering injuries. There has been no official update on her condition.
