A man was undergoing surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Friday night after a shooting involving Toronto police in the city's northwest end.

Police tweeted they were called to Jane and Giltspur Drive just after 3 p.m. to deal with an emotionally-disturbed man armed with a knife.

The province's civilian police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is now investigating the case.

The SIU is called in whenever someone is killed or injured in a confrontation with police.

In a written statement released Friday night, the SIU said police were called to a residence at 17 Coquette Road.

The statement says police had "an interaction with a 31-year-old man outside the residence. Several shots were fired."

Paramedics say the man then suffered a serious but non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was rushed to a trauma centre.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information to contact the Unit at 416-641-1873 or 1-800-787-8529 Ext. 1873.
