Toronto police say a fire that ripped through six townhomes under construction in Yorkville is being investigated as suspicious.

Fire crews were called to the scene on Scollard Street, near Bay Street and Davenport Road, around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to find heavy smoke and fire.

The townhomes were engulfed in flames, and several adjacent buildings were also badly damaged, said Steve Darling, acting deputy fire chief.

The radiant heat from the blaze also blew out windows on buildings across the street and damaged nearby vehicles, Darling added.

The townhomes were completely gutted and Darling estimated that two to three other structures will need to be completely renovated.

"There's going to be a significant dollar-value loss," he added.

No one was injured in the fire.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the origin of the blaze.

A police spokesperson said in an email early Thursday there are indications the fire may have begun under suspicious circumstances.

"It is being considered suspicious," the email said. "We do not have further information at this time."
