Toronto police say they are looking for two vehicles after a woman in her 20s was fatally struck in Scarborough on Thursday night.

The hit and run happened at around 9:30 p.m. near the corner of Birchmount Road and St. Clair Avenue E, according to acting Duty Insp. Phil Sinclair.

Investigators believe the woman was struck by both a white Ford Transit van and a black SUV as she attempted to cross Birchmount mid-block.

An off-duty Toronto firefighter who happened to be in the area stopped to help her before police and paramedics arrived, Sinclair said, but she was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Police had not identified the woman as of Friday morning.

The white Ford was last seen heading northbound on Birchmount. Investigators believe it likely has damage to its front windshield, Sinclair said. The black SUV was seen travelling south, Sinclar said.

Lawrence Clementes says he witnessed the hit and run unfold while he was stopped in a vehicle on Birchmount along with his work partner.

"We saw the lady walking here in the middle of the street, so a lot of cars were honking at her, trying to tell her to get off the road," he told CBC Toronto on Friday.

That's when he noticed a "white cargo van" northbound on Birchmount that appeared to be "driving a little bit fast," Clementes said.

"Unfortunately the driver ended up hitting the lady," he said, and she was flung a significant distance across the roadway before she was struck by a second vehicle.

Clementes and his work partner stopped traffic in both directions and went to check on her, and also called 911, he said. That's when the off-duty firefighter, who was passing in a vehicle, got out to help, he added.

"It's very sad, very sad," Clementes said.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam video that could help the investigation to come forward.

The woman was the seventh pedestrian to be killed on Toronto's streets in 2025 and the third in Scarborough, according to police data.
