Chase leads Toronto police to hospital

A gun was found but a suspect is still at large after a confrontation with Toronto police resulted in a chase that ended emptyhanded at the Hospital for Sick Children.

The incident started at 4:40 a.m., with plainclothes officers investigating two men in a vehicle in the College Street and McCaul Street area.

Police say one of the men drew what they believed to be a handgun and pointed it at an officer. He then fled on foot toward the College Street and University Avenue area.

The other man tried to flee but was caught and taken into custody.

Ammunition wasfound inthe vehicle and a firearm was found in the area, police said.

Officers searched the University Avenue area for the man who fled, including several hospital parking garages and a bus depot.

For several hours in theearlymorning,anarea around the north side of the University Avenue hospital was cordoned off as police searched the underground parking lot.

The search had wound down by 11 a.m., when Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Health Minister Tony Clement arrived at the hospital for a news conference.

At that time, only the hospital's Gerrard Street entrance was closed and officials said that otherwise,it was business as usual.

Women's College Hospitalalso sealed off

The nearby Women's College Hospital had also been sealed off earlier after a reported sighting of a person matching the description of the suspect in its parking garage, said hospital spokeswoman Naomi Rose.

After a search of the garage using police dogs, the hospital was told all was clear at 6 a.m., Rose said.

The man who fled is described as Caucasian, in his mid-30s and about five-foot-six. He may have an Eastern European accent.
