Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for parts of northwestern Ontario, as storm system makes its way into the region from Manitoba.

The heaviest snow is expected overnight into early Friday morning. Strong northerly winds gusting up on Friday may also result in blowing snow for some areas, according to the weather agency.

Areas under the weather warning include Red Lake, Ear Falls, Pikangikum and Poplar Hill First Nations.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow," reads the weather alert issued for parts of the northwest.

Total accumulations of 15 to 20 centimetres of snow is anticipated, with peak snowfall rates of 2 to 4 centimetres per hour.

Other parts of the region are expecting anywhere from 2 to 5 centimetres of snow overnight and into Friday.

Police issue road safety reminder

Ahead of the storm, Ontario Provincial Police in the northwest region has issued a reminder to drivers about staying safe near snow plows.

"With winter road maintenance in full swing, local plow operators are reporting an increase in dangerous driving behaviour, including vehicles following too closely or attempting to pass plows while they operate in echelon formation," reads a media release issued by OPP.

"Drivers who attempt to pass or weave between plows put themselves, plow operators, and other road users at significant risk."

Police are urging people to adjust their driving to winter road conditions. They are also asking people to give plows the space they need on the roads, so they can clear the roads safely.
