Lakehead Public Schools sending recruiter to attract Chinese students
'By the end of our five-year plan, we hope to have approximately 50 students,' board rep says
A trip to China by Lakehead Public Schools could help to attract foreign students to Thunder Bay, Ont.
The Lakehead District School Board is sending a recruiter overseas to China for an agent fair. The trip is a prime opportunity to bring foreign students to the city, where they'll have to pay about $12,000 in annual tuition on top of housing costs.
"By the end of our five-year plan, we hope to have approximately 50 students," Sherri-Lynne Pharand, the superintendent of education for the board told CBC News. "We'd be thrilled to take more than that, but that is our intent."
The board's recruiter will attend an agent fair that could open the door for students to education opportunities in Thunder Bay. Pharand said the program would help students learn about different cultures and get them ready for the globalized world.
The goal is to have the foreign students beginning classes in the city by next fall, said Pharand.
