Search continues for missing pilot following float plane crash on Sudbury lake
Plane crashed Wednesday night into Fairbank Lake, 1 rescued, 1 missing
Greater Sudbury Police say the search is ongoing for a missing pilot whose float plane crashed into Fairbank Lake Wednesday evening.
Police were called to the scene Wednesday around 8 p.m. A 32-year-old man, who was a passenger on the plane, was rescued that evening and treated in hospital with minor injuries. However, the pilot, a 60-year-old man, and the plane are still missing.
Sudbury police said the Ontario Provincial Police underwater search and recovery unit are assisting.
Police are also asking anyone on the lake to contact them if they find any plane debris or items related to the crash.
At this point, police said they don't believe the lake is contaminated as a result of fuel or oil leakage from the plane. However, if residents have concerns, they are encouraged to contact the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change spills action centre, or the Sudbury and District Health Unit.
