School boards from Temagami to Hearst in northern Ontario, including Timmins, closed schools on Wednesday following bomb threats. Some schools in northwestern Ontario also closed.

The OPP has said in a press release there is no evidence of actual explosive devices following the threats.

"As a precaution the majority of the targeted schools have been closed while the investigation continues," police said.

"Parents are encouraged to contact their schools or school boards for more information."

Bill Dickson, acting manager of media relations for the force, said early this morning police were notified about threats against schools in northern Ontario.

He said later in the day, police became aware of schools in eastern Ontario that also received threats.

"There have been no devices found and no reason to believe this is legitimate," he said.

Dickson said threats were sent electronically to the school boards demanding money.

OPP's cyber crime team is investigating.

"It just appears to be someone trying to make money. Best-case scenario it's just a huge inconvenience for everyone."

OPP said many of the affected schools and facilities have closed as a precaution while the investigation continues.

Dickson said he couldn't tell CBC how many schools were affected.

"We want to make sure we let everyone know we are on top of this," he said.

In a statement to CBC News, District School Board Ontario North East said the OPP has given its schools clearance to reopen on Thursday.

"The safety of our students and staff is our priority. District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) closed all its' schools today due to a safety concern in our communities," the statement said.

"We look forward to welcoming all DSB1 students and staff back to school tomorrow."
