Sudbury Action Centre for Youth to close on April 1

The Sudbury Action Centre for Youth (SACY) will close its doors on April 1, according to an update from its board of directors.

The organization provides outreach, housing, shelter and harm-reduction services to 650 clients each month.

"While there are temporary solutions that allow us to continue to serve the community, due to financial pressures, the closure of the agency is presently inevitable," SACY's board of directors said in a news release.

Services are expected to continue until March 31.

"In doing this, we remain focused on our situation having as little impact as possible on the people who rely on our dedicated staff, who have consistently offered support in meaningful ways, without judgment," the news release said.

On Jan. 19, there was a sewage backup at SACY's downtown Sudbury office that caused a significant amount of damage, according to the organization at that time.

Repairs were said to require a $10,000 deductible upfront. 

Supervised consumption site also closing

Sudbury's supervised consumption site, called The Spot, is also due to close at the end of March.

It provides a space for people to use drugs under the supervision of health-care professionals who help prevent overdoses.

Since January, The Spot has relied on community donations to continue running.

The organization Réseau ACCESS Network runs the site. Its executive director, Heidi Eisenhauer, told CBC News they've lost a lot of staff members because they don't currently have permanent funding from the province.
