The essential homegrown performers at NLFB

Sudbury’s summer music festival gives visitors a chance to see local talent performing alongside some of the biggest names on the circuit.

There'll be no shortage of musical talent on the shores of Ramsey Lake this weekend

Along with headliners Steven Page, Bahamas and Natalie MacMaster, homegrown talent will be on display this weekend at Bell Park. (City of Greater Sudbury)

Sudbury's Northern Lights-Festival Boreal gives visitors a chance to see local talent performing alongside the biggest names on the circuit.

Here's a list of some of these performers at this year's summer festival.

Kate Maki

If you get the chance to hear one voice over the weekend, make it Kate's. Already well-known in the city, the shores of Ramsey Lake seem like the perfect backdrop for a woman who delivers heartfelt lines like "you and I melt faster than the snow," and makes you believe her. Saturday 4:00 p.m.

Frederick Squire

Longlister for the 2011 Polaris Prize, the Copper Cliff singer-songwriter brings his languid, ramshackle sound to stage on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Brian Dunn

One of Sudbury's most well-known roots artists, Brian Dunn is also known as the man-behind-the-counter at Cosmic Dave's Guitar Emporium on Elgin Street. We call his sound 'eclectic,' 'late-night' and 'smoky' and you can see him on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Murder, Murder

Fresh from their UK tour, it's full-tilt Bluegrass, done Nickel-city style. No word if they'll wear the undershirts. Friday, 9:30 p.m

Rose-Erin Stokes

Stokes, touted as one of the most honest singer-songwriters in the region, takes the stage on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Collective Roots

Tipping their hat to NLFB's Francophone roots, Collective roots features acoustic, traditional harmonies.

Dwayne Trudeau

Sudbury's own slide blues guitarist is somewhat reclusive. You'll have to get there Saturday at 9:00 p.m. to catch the master at play.

Fagroongala

For fans of Natalie MacMaster, make sure to catch Duncan Cameron's Celtic wizardry, on display Saturday 8:30 p.m.

Jennifer Holub

Holub has been drawing a lot of attention - whether it's the smooth, breezy sound or her magnetic stage presence - which you can catch at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Josh Turnbull

Perfect accompaniment for the summer. You'll enjoy Turnbull's trippy, eclectic take on folk music. Friday 8:00 pm, Saturday 1:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 pm

Matt Foy and Little Sir Echo

Not much can be written about Foy that hasn't already been said. Safe to say that Foy will be bringing something wild to the stage, and the most predictable thing will be his perfect unpredictability. Saturday 2:00 p.m.

Hugh Jazz

Improv jazz at its northern best. Saturday 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 3:00 p.m.

Martine Fortin

Sudbury chanteuse won the Meltdown competition in 2016. Lose yourself in her velvety delivery. Friday 11:00 p.m. and Saturday 6:00 pm

Mandala

You'll have a chance to watch a local crowd favourite - the bad boys from Valley East, popular indie rock band Mandala, on Saturday 11:00 p.m. and Sunday 7:00 pm

You can also catch the Northern All-Star Steel Band, Jeff Stewart, and Paul Dunn on the stage.
